Pelvic pain can be caused by a variety of reasons. It can be caused by urinary tract infections, overactive bladder, scrotal irritation, vaginal infections, hemorrhoids, and trauma of any kind. Weakened pelvic floor muscles can cause pain as well. Some of the most common causes are trauma (injury), or hemorrhoids. The good news is it is often treatable and curable. However, the bad news is it can be awfully uncomfortable and debilitating.

Causes of Pelvic Pain

More uncommon causes of pelvic pain, in women, are vulvar vestibulititis and vulvodynia. Generalized vulvodynia can be caused by a urinary tract infection, childbirth or cream treatment for a yeast infection. When the vulvar discomfort continues despite treatment, vulvodynia is diagnosed. It is characterized by pain, burning or stabbing pain in the vulva without any apparent medical cause. It is a frustrating and very unnerving condition to have to deal with, especially given the private nature of the area involved. It is rarely spoken about and can make not only sexual intercourse painful, but simple sitting and wearing of jeans can become suddenly unbearable. Vestibulitis, on the other hand occurs generally in younger women, and is characterized by severe pain even when a cotton swab is gently touched to the entrance of the vagina.

Rubber Ring Cushions

Whether the pelvic pain is caused by bladder problems, vulvar pain, or pain in the scrotum, sitting can become more tolerable with rubber ring cushions, or rubber seat cushions. It may not prove to be the seat of choice when at a public work place, but rubber seat cushions could enable a sufferer of pelvic pain to sit a little easier. Alleviation of the physical pressure of the anal area, scrotal areas and/or vaginal areas on a hard surface of a chair can help pelvic pain sufferers through a need to sit through a dinner or meeting.

Of course, determining the cause of pelvic pain can be as excruciating as the problem itself. Many sufferers do not know what doctors to turn to, how to explain it or are too embarrassed to embellish the details of their pain. The first course of action would be to go to a primary care physician and have him or her take a recent history of activities or products that may have caused pain. Simply using a new laundry detergent or bath soap or shower gel can be the culprit. Eliminating their use will help.

If the problem of pelvic pain is stems from a urinary tract infection, consider taking cranberry tablets for maintaining urinary tract health and preventing urinary tract infection from occurring.

If the pelvic pain is hemorrhoids, there are many compounds on the market to help shrink them. Sitting on rubber ring cushions will help avoid additional swelling. In worst cases, hemorrhoids can be removed surgically in a minor procedure, but conservative measures should always be considered first.

There are urologists, gyno-urologists and physical therapists that specialize in pelvic pain treatment in both men and women. The pain can be managed and relieved with the assistance of pelvic pain aids.
